Welcome to the School Counseling webpage for the students and families of Valley View Elementary School! My name is Mrs. Paz and I am looking forward to being your school counselor again this year.
As your child's school counselor, I am dedicated to providing a comprehensive, responsive, and preventive program that fosters every student's social-emotional, academic, and career development. I deliver multiple tiers of counseling support to students through whole group (classroom) counseling lessons, small group opportunities targeting a specific skill or issue, and individual counseling sessions for students needing short-term, solution-focused interventions. Additionally, I coordinate Section 504 plans for students qualifying for these provisions.
Your child will receive whole class counseling through a curriculum that embodies and supports our school’s larger initiative: "Building Strong Minds, Bodies, and Character." Every trimester, students will receive three lessons targeting a new skill or concept to support their social-emotional, academic, and career developments. Units designed for Grades K-2 include Getting Along With Others, Managing Feelings, and Integrity. Units designed for Grades 3-4 include Personal Responsibility, Being Members of A Positive Learning Community, and Academic Achievement. These units are comprised of three separate lessons, taught once a month within the classroom setting.
Additional counseling services will be offered through small groups, designed for those students who may benefit from more specialized, intensive supports. If an issue or skill gap appears to interfere with a child's academic or social experience at school, I encourage both teachers and parents to consider requesting the student join a small group, or to receive short-term, individual counseling services. Monthly newsletters will be sent home to promote these small group opportunities, and I welcome any suggestions for groups not already planned.
I am as committed to parents as I am to students, so if you have a concern or challenge with which you would like some help, please just ask. I have plenty of resources related to:
  • Relational Aggression (aka social 'drama')
  • Anger Management
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Loss/Grief
  • Divorce/Blended Families
  • Executive Function
  • Social Skill-Building
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Sensory Processing Disorder
  • Conscious Discipline (Loving Guidance parenting strategies)
I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of your child's world at school. If you have a question or concern about your student or the school counseling program at Valley View, please feel free to call the school or email me directly.

If you are faced with an emergency situation, here are some options on how to handle it.
